New Jersey Betting Site Winners by Category

With the maturity of the NJ betting market, there is no shortage of online sportsbooks. Major sportsbooks like Caesars, BetMGM, Fanduel and PointsBet have been pushing for innovation and more competition since the very start.

However, this is not stopping new sportsbooks like bet365 from joining the state and gaining popularity with NJ patrons. With the list of sportsbooks ever growing, the NJ market is getting more competitive with each sportsbook that joins, whether it’s a small or a major operator.

Due to this competition, sportsbooks try to provide the ever-improving sign-up bonuses, odds, free bets, and promotions. We highly recommend BetMGM Sportsbook as the best welcome bonus in NJ for various reasons. It’s one of the largest free bet welcome bonuses available in NJ and you only need to wager the free bet once.

At bet365, you can receive your withdrawal funds within 24 hours when using PayPal. So, if you’re seeking a speedy payout option in NJ, we highly recommend bet365. Another benefit of using PayPal on bet365 is that you won’t be charged any fees by the sportsbook when withdrawing.

How We Rate the Best New Jersey Sportsbooks

In New Jersey, patrons have nine great sportsbooks to choose from which offer a variety of betting features. Given the fierce competition in the market, it was challenging to choose these nine sportsbooks out of the 21 that are available in the state.

We also noticed that in NJ even the smaller sportsbooks like Tipico had decent betting features and odds, which is why we included them in our top list. To narrow down which sportsbooks meet our high standards, we used the following criteria.

  • safety licenses
    Safety and licenses

A sportsbook must partner with a casino or racetrack in NJ in order to obtain a license. Up to three online sportsbooks can operate under the license of a casino or racetrack. Given that the NJDGE has approved 21 sportsbooks, you have a wide selection to pick from. There is no need to risk losing your money on offshore sportsbooks when you’ve got more than enough safe and legal sports betting sites to join in NJ.

  • bonuses
    Bonuses

The range of sign-up offers in NJ is between $100 all the way up to $2000. We calculated the average amount of a welcome bonus in NJ and it came to $722. The most common welcome bonus is a free bet one, however, there are two sportsbooks that offer a match deposit bonus.

  • odds quality
    Quality of odds

You have a wide variety of odds to pick from with 9 sportsbooks available. The odds margin is not significantly impacted by the 13% annual sports betting tax in NJ. When we compared the odds offered by NJ sportsbooks, we discovered that they were similar to each other. However, some sportsbooks like Caesars Sportsbook did provide odds boosts, which would boost your earnings.

  • mobile apps
    Mobile apps

Mobile sports betting is legal in NJ, and all of the 9 sportsbooks we mentioned in our list above have a betting app that can be downloaded on your phone or tablet. Live betting, live streaming and other betting features including early cashout and bet builder are available on NJ sportsbook apps.

  • payment methods
    Payment methods

There are 13 different payment methods available in NJ. Remember that not every sportsbook accepts all of these payment options. We highly suggest using PayPal for NJ betting, since it has a fixed fee of 2.9%. with just your email address and password needed for a transaction, PayPal provides you with a convenient way to deposit and withdraw money.

Mobile Sports Betting in New Jersey

The sportsbooks we mention in our top list have a betting app available for download on your mobile or tablet. Betting apps are very convenient as you can sign up, fund your account, withdraw and place bets all from your phone.

Betting apps are available for Android and iOS devices and can be downloaded from Google Play Store or the App Store. When using a sports betting app you must always have your GPS turned on, as the sportsbook needs to confirm your location is in NJ where they hold a license.

All of these sportsbook apps in NJ are great for betting, however, some excel even further. Below we’ve included the top three betting apps in New Jersey.

One of our favorites is the BetMGM app, as it allows you to use all of their great betting features on your mobile. Geo-Location on Mobile Betting Apps

Geo-location is used by sportsbooks to confirm you are in New Jersey. The license enables them to accept bets from patrons in New Jersey only. When using a betting app you must always keep your GPS turned on, this is completely safe as the sportsbook just needs to confirm you’re inside NJ.

When placing a wager on a betting app you must always follow these three rules. If you skip any of them the sportsbook won’t allow you to place a bet, or can dispute it in the future.

Physically located in New Jersey

Online New Jersey sportsbooks are only legal in the state and not in any other state where they don’t hold a license. This is why you are only allowed to use them if you are physically located in NJ.

GPS needs to be turned on

Your GPS must be turned on when using the betting app, and make sure you give access to your location to the app. When you turn off your GPS the sportsbook cannot accept any bets from you until your turn it back on.

Geo locator app required

Some sports betting apps require downloading an extra app called geo-locator which helps them confirm your location is really in NJ. Nowadays however most apps have this integrated into the main betting app, so you wouldn’t need to download anything extra.

Sports Betting in New Jersey

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement was founded in 1977 and since then it has been regulating and overseeing all gaming-related activities in NJ.

For a sportsbook to operate in NJ they need a license by the NJDGE. They can apply for a license once they partner up with a casino or racebook that holds a vendor license.

Any casino or racebook can have up to three online sportsbooks operating under their license. This is why there are 10 betting licenses and 21 sportsbooks available in New Jersey.

New Jersey Gambling Laws

To bet at an online sportsbook in NJ you must be 21 years old or older and you must be physically in New Jersey. This is why sportsbooks require you to download their geo-locator app and turn on your GPS when using their betting app.

In NJ it is prohibited to bet on NJ college teams or on college events that are held in the state. Therefore, you can bet on college teams from outside NJ and on other NCAA matches being held outside of NJ.

New Jersey was one of the first states to legalize daily fantasy sports. For the best daily fantasy sports betting experience, we highly suggest you take a look at Fanduel. You can place your DFS bets via their app which can be downloaded on iOS and Android devices.

Esports has been recently given the green light by the NJDGE, and so far just one sportsbook has been allowed to offer esports bets in NJ.

Betting Sites to Avoid

There are multiple offshore sports betting sites that you should avoid at all costs. In the table below we listed the main three offshore sportsbooks you should avoid in NJ.

You can only legally place online bets on sportsbooks that have a license in NJ and are regulated by the NJDGE. Therefore, the three offshore sportsbooks below are illegal.

If you still decide to use the below sports betting sites and your withdrawal fails, your funds aren’t protected by the NJDGE. This means that there would be nothing you can do to recover your money.

Pros and Cons of Online Betting in New Jersey

Patrons in New Jersey are benefiting greatly from the competition in the state’s sports betting market. This rivalry between sportsbooks has provided patrons with greater promotions, odds, and betting features. Only states like Colorado and Indiana can match NJ in this regard.

There are nine great sportsbooks available in New Jersey, all of which have a betting app that can be downloaded on your iOS or Android device. You can register at any of these nine sportsbooks online as in-person registration is not required in NJ.

Another benefit of online betting in New Jersey is the legality of esports in the state. Unlike the majority of the other states, this shows how progressive the NJ sports betting market is.

Pros
  • Great selection of sportsbooks
  • In-person registration not required
  • Great variety of betting apps
  • Esports is legal
  • Competitive odds
Cons
  • No betting allowed on NCAA events taking place in NJ
  • No betting allowed on in-state college teams

Conclusion

New Jersey is without a doubt the most progressive state when it comes to online betting. All nine of the sportsbooks we recommend offer great welcome bonuses, betting features, and odds due to the competition amongst sportsbook operators.

Besides betting on major sports leagues and niche sports, daily fantasy sports and esports are both legal in NJ. However, you aren’t allowed to bet on in-state college teams and any college matches being held in NJ.

States that legalized sports betting should unquestionably look at New Jersey as an example of what a betting market should look like. With more betting operators joining the state, we are confident that sportsbooks in this state will continue to provide great bonuses and betting features.
