How to Bet on the Belmont Stakes
Wondering how to bet the Belmont Stakes? Well, you’ll be delighted to know it is really simple. The toughest task is picking a Belmont Stakes betting site that caters to your needs. Once you’ve done that, just follow the steps below to start betting.
Types of Belmont Stakes Bets
Picking the best Belmont Stakes bets will greatly enhance your prospects of finding a winner. When there is a big field it makes sense to keep things simple with single bets on the win/place/show market.
If there are less than 10 runners then it makes sense to take a punt on exotics like exactas, quinellas and trifectas. The fewer horses that run, the better chance that your exotic will hit. Find out more about the best Belmont Stakes bet types below.
-
Win/place/show
Win/Place/Show bets are very popular with Belmont Stakes bettors. It is a single wager and to win your horse must finish 1st (win bet), 1st or 2nd (place) or 1st, 2nd or 3rd.
-
Exacta
This is a single bet on the first two finishers in the exact order. Well suited to the Belmont Stakes as usually the field is relatively small.
-
Quinella
This bet is basically the same as an exacta, the main difference being that it consists of two bets and your selections can finish 1-2 in any order.
-
Trifecta
Another wager that is suited to the Belmont Stakes due to the usual smaller field size. It is a single bet which requires your horses to finish 1-2-3 in the correct order.
-
Superfecta
Again, this single wager is perfect for the Belmont Stakes when there are less than 10 runners. Similar to the trifecta except the 1-2-3-4 is required.
-
Box bet
A box bet is a variation on trifectas and superfectas. It consists of multiple bets and selections can finish 1-2-3 or 1-2-3-4 in any order.
-
Wheel betting
A wheel bet is when bettors nominate the most likely winner and then choose a number of horses they think will finish in the places behind the winner (number of places depends on the bet type). If the horse you pick as the winner loses, the bet is lost.
Belmont Stakes Betting Bonuses and Promotions
Before you have a bet on the race, make sure you check for any relevant Belmont Stakes betting bonuses and promotions. As is the case with the other Triple Crown races like the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, many betting sites have offers specifically targeted at the race.
For example, TwinSpires have run a couple of Belmont Stakes promotions in the past. One was a money-back special where you got a free bet if your horse finished 2nd. Other offers to keep your eyes peeled for include enhanced odds welcome offers or exacta/trifecta insurance.

Belmont Stakes History and Records
Belmont Park Racecourse in Elmont, New York is the venue for the Belmont Stakes. The race is usually run in early June, it was first held in 1867 and it is the final leg of the Triple Crown. Since 1977 only two horses have won the Triple Crown at Belmont, American Pharoah in 2015 and Justify in 2018, both for Bob Baffert.
The biggest shock in Belmont Stakes history came in 2002 when 70/1 outsider Sarava played the role of party pooper and destroyed the Triple Crown dreams of Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner War Emblem.
Baffert and Todd Pletcher have both won the race three times since 2000 so look out for their horses. They have a long way to go to catch James G Rowe who won the race eight times between 1883 and 1913. If you want to learn more about this famous race, visit the Belmont Stakes official website.
